BLEACHED

Choreographed by @hannahhbrookes

An exploration of becoming more than you could ever know.

Hailing from Yuin Country, Hannah is a formally trained multidisciplinary creative and performer. Her creative practice explores the intersection between alternative music production and choreographic form. An alumni of both Austi Dance and Physical theatre and WAAPA’s undergrad and Honours programs, Hannah is now choreographing and performing between the South Coast and Sydney both independently, and as a part of Dance Makers Collectives Future Makers program. Her recent choreographic credits include ‘PLATINUM’ presented in uNCOILEd for Austi Dance and Physical theatre and MOVE FM with Dance Makers Collective.

Irregular Atmospheres

Choreographed by @linda_luna_luke and performed in collaboration Kraig Grady

Our imaginations are rich with infinite images. Images swirling in the darkness of timelessness and space. Swooshing in, birthed into being, embodied for an instant, only to disappear again and be usurped by another image. Linda (dance) and Kraig (percussion) entangle sound and movement to find the joy of instability.

Linda lives in the Dharawal/ Illawarra region, NSW. Linda's extensive career includes performances with De Quincey Co and Proper Motion as well as independent choreographers. She facilitates CO/MINGLING supported by Merrigong Theatre. Linda teaches performance-making at the University of Wollongong, where she is also undertaking a Doctorate of Creative Arts.

Kraig Grady, a Californian now living in Australia, is a composer renowned for his work with acoustic instruments of his own making or modification. For Irregular Atmospheres he will perform live with percussion instruments collected from Tibet, China and a Native American Drum reflecting his Chippewa Ancestry.

JOAN

Choreographed by @jacktuc

Searching for redemption in the darkroom, I put on my armour to face the night.

A work inspired by Queer nightlife culture.

Jack is currently a regionally based artist on Dharawal Land. Jack has predominantly performed as an artist with Catapult Dance and Proper Motion in addition to other project based work that has led him to perform nationally in Australia and internationally including Mexico City and Berlin.

This presentation of JOAN builds from jack's first development as resident artist in the inaugural @side.step__ program facilitated by @ellawahe

Deep, Eternal Hum

Pohaturoa - a sacred, natural space, defaced to make way for a road. Cut, cut, cut all you like but the deep, eternal hum of the ancestors still beckons, never to be silenced.

Lisa Maris McDonell is a choreographer and performer based on Dharawal Country. A WAAPA graduate, Lisa has facilitated projects both within Australia and internationally over a 25 year period. In 2021 Lisa started presenting work under the title Proper Motion in an effort to provide opportunity and visibility to NSW South Coast based artists. Lisa is also a dance educator who has worked for many of Australia’s leading dance organisations. She currently teaches the full-time students at Joanne Grace School of Dance and across Sydney Dance Company’s various programs.

Happy Hour #20 is curated by Lisa Maris McDonell who has reimagined this iteration of Happy Hour as the third stage development of her ongoing project, The BUDGET.

Lisa says "This Happy Hour I'm bringing a handful of Sydney's most respected and experienced artists out from behind their desks (where they work in order to survive and also support our ever more fragile dance community) for a new work development that doubles as a performance. The BUDGET does just as our funding overlords would like us to do and places The BUDGET at the centre of creative output. The BUDGET looks at an artist’s relationship to money in a world that requires everything to have a dollar value.

I'm asking myself a few questions as I enter this stage of development, including;

  • How can I creatively work within the budget that I've been given by ReadyMade while completing an entire stage of development for this project AND provide an enjoyable evening out for our audience, while making important statements and sticking to the rules I've made to contain the project?

  • Why do mature dance artists in Australia (often female) end up putting their choreographic practices aside to work behind a desk?

  • Should I be doing that (working behind a desk) instead of this (making more dances)?

  • What if Australia got to see their choreographers work over a lifetime making dance, like sometimes happens in other places?"

Performers: Jane McKernan, Maya Gavish, Emma Saunders, Lizzie Thomson, + others TBA.

Live projection: Martin Fox

Happy Hour is supported by the NSW government through Create NSW

KineStruct

Join Lisa Maris McDonell for a two-day weekend workshop for adult dancers with any level of experience. Over the two days, participants will have the opportunity to be exposed to Lisa ‘s movement making practice, engaging in exercises that encourage deep listening to the body. These exercises allow the participant to access the stories that live within the body and prepare the dancer to become available to choreographic prompts. Over the course of the workshop Lisa builds live choreographic structures which the dancers can respond to in real time, creating a scaffold for a performance which will be presented to friends and family on Sunday afternoon.
